SC is all set to deliver an interim order on 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in educational institutions.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday is all set to deliver an interim order on 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in educational institutions.

A Bench of Justices Arijit and Pasayat and L S Panta would deliver the verdict on the batch of petitions filed by various organisations and individuals challenging the decision as being ultra vires (unconstitutional).

Various organisations had earlier challenged the Centre's decision to implement the quota, claiming that there was no relevant data on the number of OBCs in the country.

"Unless and until it is determined by the Centre who is socially and economically backward, this Act cannot really be given effect, the Bench had said earlier, as anti-quota propagandists opposed its implementation on the grounds that a 75-year-old census could not be the basis for identifying OBCs.

However, the Centre has maintained that general category students will not be affected by the quota, as the number of general seats has been increased proportionately.

The Government had enacted the Central Educational Institutions Act last year which provided for the reservations in institutes of higher education.
