The School Education Department on Tuesday evening changed its mind and announced that schools in the city would remain open on September 20.
Earlier in the day, the department had announced that schools would remain closed on that day in view of the nation-wide strike called by opposition parties and trade unions decrying the hike in price of diesel.
With September 19 being a holiday for schools and other institutions on account of Vinayaka Chaturthi, it would give no option for the schools to directly inform students about the change in schedule, rued principals. The principal of a city school said that they had received the information on the closure of schools through an SMS from the department. “Following this, we declared it a holiday, and that the day’s exam would be held on another day. With Wednesday too being a holiday, we now wonder how to inform our students that the exams will he held as planned,” she said.
However, those schools that have a system of sending text messages to parents to inform them of school activities did not have a problem. Margaret S, whose son studies in a top boys’ school in the city, said, “We received the SMS from the school. This makes it very convenient for us to keep tab on the developments.”
