CHENNAI: A city-based scientist is the lone Indian innovator among the eight finalists selected from across the world for a global competition in United Kingdom to chalk out fresh proposals about systems that can provide transportable energy storage.Geomarine Biotechnologies, headed by its scientist and managing Director Dr T Charles John Bhaskar told City Express on Monday that he is the lone Indian to be selected for “Global Energy Storage Challenge” in which the organisers are seeking fresh ideas about systems that can provide transportable energy storage.Finalists will present their ideas before sponsors, investors, peers and a panel of independent judges at the two-day Pitchlive London event,  Innovation Market Place, which is scheduled to take place on October 24 and 25 at Business Design Centre in London, UK.The winner will receive a prize money of US$2,50,000 sponsored by the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) and Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG). The event is being organised by OmniCompete, a company which is aiming to become the world leader in providing high-quality innovation competitions.Bhaskar said his proposal was about using biomolecules obtained from nature while tapping energy. “Biomolecules are naturally occurring molecules which are involved in the energy transfer in biological systems. These molecules are present in various sources from plant kingdom to animal kingdom and bacteria,” the scientist added.“The proper combination of tapping them, storing and using them is part of the innovation,” he added. Bhaskar’s first innovation was the development of  the indigenous pro-biotics to be used in aquaculture and the technology was transferred to a Chennai-based company, Poseidon Biotech. He has also won a grand prize worth $10,000 at one of the Idea Jam open source innovation challenges titled Crop Yield, conducted by Idea connection.
