Chennai: Sunday's tragedy has sent shock waves down the city as it battles the unprecedented rain havoc.
The incident has brought back memories of November 6 when six persons were killed in a stampede in the Vysarpadi district of North Chennai after people rushed to receive relief materials at a government distribution centre.
At Vysarpadi, people jostled with each other to get relief material which comprised of Rs 2000 in cash and 10 kg of rice, and in the resultant stampede six were killed and four injured, police said.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 15,000 for those injured.
She had also assured the people that the relief of Rs 2000, 10-kgs of rice, a dhoti, a saree and a litre of kerosene announced by the Government would be given to all people affected by the rains and no one would be left out.
Aaccording to eyewitnesses, over 3,000 people had gathered at the school at 0420 hrs IST and later gatecrashed into the relief centre following a rumour that relief would be distributed at that time, though the official time was at 0900 hrs IST.
The sudden rush into the centre led to the deaths and injuries, said and asked people not to get carried away by rumours.
