New Delhi: Senior advocate K K Venugopal is most likely to be the new Attorney General of India. According to highly placed sources, the Prime Minister’s Office is considering Venugopal’s name because of his seniority and knowledge of constitutional laws.

Law ministry had recommended Venugopal’s name after taking into consideration others, including senior lawyer Harish Salve and current Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, a second source told News18.

Earlier this week, Venugopal had told CNN-News18 that he was consulted about his proposed appointment. “It is premature to comment on the issue. There are some other names too that will be discussed once the PM is back to country. Let him come back and then we will see,” Venugopal, 86, had said.

Venugopal, who started his practice in the apex court in early 1960s, had said that he has was informed by the PMO that a decision was likely after the PM’s return from the US.

Venugopal held the office of Additional Solicitor General in Morarji Desai’s Government.

He has appeared in variety of cases in last 50 years. Venugopal was appointed as amicus curiae to assist the Supreme Court in 2G spectrum case.

He also appeared for BJP leader L K Advani in the Babri demolition case, in which the apex court recently clubbed the two trials and held that BJP leaders, including Advani, Uma Bharti and Murli Manohar Joshi, will have to face trial along with kar sevaks for demolition of the disputed structure.
