ALAPPUZHA: After a near-death experience, a stranded Malayali sailor of the wrecked Italian luxury cruise liner Costa Concordia finally reached home on Saturday. Shinoj Vijayan 26, of Thettuvelakatthu, Krishnapuram in Kayamkulam was received with tears of joy by his parents and relatives as he arrived at his native place, after escaping with about 500 passengers from the ill-fated vessel.Speaking about his ordeal, Shinoj remembered that, “it was a heart breaking incident.” The ship began its fateful journey last Saturday midnight, from the Civittavecchia port in Italy, for a seven-day cruise, with 1200 people, including tourists and staff on board.  However, after just two hours’ journey,it ran aground off the Tuscan coast and sank, crashing into a reef near Giglio Island.“At that time I was sleeping. A loud sound woke me up. I discovered that the ship was leaning, as the water rushed in. I along with other staff members put down the life-boats and began rescue operations. I operated the life-boat four times to resuce over 500 passengers,” Shinoj recounts. That the accident occured near the coast helped reduce its impact and toll,” he added. Recounting the panic that suddenly hit the passengers, Shinoj said that some of them jumped into the water, eventually dying. “Eight Malayalis were aboard, among 202 Indians. Except one, who is still missing, all others escaped unhurt,” he added.
