This election season, it's raining promises in Madhya Pradesh with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan trying to woo voters in his bid to get re-elected. He extended his Jan Ashirwad Yatra that was to end with a rally in Bhopal last month to make a few more promises and lay a few more foundation stones.
The mega rally in Bhopal on September 25 was supposed to be the conclusion of Shivraj Singh Chouhan's Jan Ashirwad Yatra. But a slight delay in announcing poll dates by the Election Commission prompted Chouhan to extend the yatra. Seeing an opportunity, he even laid the foundation stone for a long pending medical college in Vidisha. "Vidisha needs this hospital. We have not been able to produce enough doctors and this will fulfil that need," Chouhan said.
In the last meeting of the state cabinet before the announcement of poll dates, Chouhan hurried through with more last minute SOPs. These included: - Increased dearness allowance for government employees - Land for setting up a National Technical Research Organisation office - A sugarcane research centre worth Rs 8 crore was sanctioned - and a polytechnic college Most of these projects had been awaiting approval for several years.
The Congress alleges all this is just a poll gimmick. Congress Election Campaign committee Jyotiraditya Scindia said, "The Chief Minister has made over 7,000 promises but over 6,000 have not been kept. His announcements make no difference." The Congress is desperate for a comeback in MP and its leadership is trying to put up a united front. So, Chouhan is not leaving anything to chance in the run up to elections.
