Shopian killings: Police detain PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti in Pulwama
A preliminary police inquiry into the killing of four people by the CRPF in Shopian has found that three of the four people were local civilians.

Srinagar: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti was on Wednesday detained in Pulwama when she was on her way to Shopian where curfew remains clamped for the fourth days over the killing of four people by the the CRPF.

A preliminary police inquiry into the killings has found that three of the four people were local civilians. The CRPF's defence is that the men tried to attack their camp but the Opposition and the locals are demanding a judicial probe.

The police are saying that there is no record of terrorism against the trio and that the fourth person, a non-local, could be Lashkar terrorist Abdullah Haroon. The police are investigating even as there is anger in the area. Residents have claimed they were locals and even the state Congress president has sought clarification from the Omar Abdullah government.

The CRPF, however, continues to stand by its version, saying six terrorists on two motorcycles tried to attack their camp and fired on troops. In the crossfire, four were killed and one injured. The police are saying that the phone seized from the spot has a software generally used by Lashkar commanders.

But locals who defied the curfew and clashed with police continue to allege that there was no shootout and the four were killed in cold blood. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is now facing flak with coalition partner Congress slamming him for his silence.
