Students from Hulkutri Senior Primary School in Siddapur Taluk stepped out of their classrooms to engage in practical agriculture lessons. Guided by their teachers and local farmers, class 4 and class 5 enthusiastically participated in paddy planting. This hands-on activity was conducted in the field of Lokesha Padmanabha Gowda in Hemajeni Majare, where the children had the chance to actively partake in sowing rice.
This year, 13 students from these grades had the unique opportunity to gain firsthand agricultural experience by spending about six hours in the fields. For many, it was their first time engaging in such work. In addition to planting, these students are also expected to participate in rice harvesting and paddy threshing activities.
The primary aim of these activities is to foster an interest in agriculture among the students and provide them with a practical understanding of the subject.
The school’s head teacher, Darshan Harikanta, along with the field owners Lokesha Padmanabha Gowda, Shweta Lokesha Gowda, and Lakshmi Iswara Gowda, took the initiative to educate the students about the techniques involved in planting.
In a similar sight, a school in Udhampur has introduced rooftop farming in its curriculum to teach students about the growth of plants and the importance of organic produce.
The initiative, launched by the school management in collaboration with the Udhampur Agriculture Department, aims to spread awareness about organic farming and improve farming practices.
The rooftop garden will serve as a hands-on learning space for the students, allowing them to experience first-hand the growth cycle of various plants, fruits, vegetables and even ornamental flowers. This hands-on experience will go beyond the textbooks and foster a deeper understanding of farming and the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
The school’s principal Vaneet Gupta said, “This is the first initiative in Jammu and Kashmir. The aim was to create awareness. Students will learn how to make fertilizer and how to do organic and inorganic farming. There are herbs, shrubs and creepers here. We wanted to give practical experience to the students. They should improve their power of observation and analytical thinking. In our new education policy, more importance is given to practical learning. This is learning for life.” He further said that the aim is to impart advanced methods of farming to the students.
