The incident happened when forces from the Siliguri police commissionerate tried to remove protestors who were holding a hunger strike against the proposed construction of a electrical crematorium in the area.
Siliguri: Police lathicharged and opened fire on an angry mob in the Ramghat area of Siliguri on Wednesday. No injuries were reported so far but the angry mob retaliated by setting a police vehicle on fire and ransacking another police car.
The incident happened when forces from the Siliguri police commissionerate tried to remove protestors who were holding a hunger strike against the proposed construction of a electrical crematorium in the area. Protestors say that police fired at least two rounds during the clash.
Local residents have been resisting the proposed construction of an electrical crematorium in the area from a long time. The area remains tense and a large contingent of police and RAF have been deployed in the area.
