THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kidney Federation of India, led by Fr David Chirammel, has requested the Chief Minister to introduce a single-window clearance system for kidney transplants. A memorandum with this demand was submitted by Fr Chirammel to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy the other day. "At present, almost 30 certificates are needed for getting the approval for kidney transplant. They include police verification, judicial officer’s approval, medical certificate and Notary’s certificate to prove that the donor is not a drug addict. For this, one need to run from pillar to post for three to four months,’’ Fr Chirammel said. He said even while he appreciates the intention of the government behind implementing stringent measures to prevent sale of kidneys in the guise of donation, there should be a relaxation of norms for the donations coming under the kidney bank project. The kidney bank project launched by Fr Chirammel by enrolling renowned industrialist Kochouseph Chittilappally as the first donor couldn’t grow according to the pace visualised by its architects. The suggestion of Kidney Federation is to provide a green channel for all kidney donations approved by the kidney bank."No money is involved in the kidney transactions under the bank. It is sort of a barter system where one man donates kidney to another with a condition that his/her spouse should donate kidney to another deserving patient,’’ he said. The memorandum submitted by the Foundation to the CM has more demands such as subsidy for dialysis, free train/bus travel for kidney donors and regulation of prices of drugs needed by renal patients.
