Los Angeles: Team Slumdog might have stolen the show at this year's Academy Awards with eight Oscars to its credit, but there were other big winners of the night.

Gus Van Sant's Milk took home two Oscars including Best Actor trophy for Sean Penn for his portrayal of openly gay politician Harvey milk. Milk also bagged the Best Original Screenplay award.

There was not much doubt about the Best Actress honour, the competition was between Meryl Streep for Doubt and Kate Winslet for The Reader.

Winslet won the Oscar, her first, for her role in the World War II drama.

As expected late Heath Ledger was named the Best Supporting Actor for his immemrobable joker act in The Dark Knight while Penelope Cruz was awarded the Best Actress in a supporting role for her performance in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Curiously enough Brad Pitt-starrer The Curious Case of Benjamin Button that was nominated for 13 Oscars, picked up just three - Best Art Direction, Visual Effects and Makeup.

It was pitted against the Kung Fu Panda, but Wall-E won the Academy's Hear and the Best Animation Oscar.

And amidst all the big feature productions was a small budget film. Megan Mylan's Smile Pinki, shot and set in India that won the Best Documentary (Short) Oscar.
