Son dead, court rules over-ambitious father guilty
Exhausted, tired boy Biswadip was slapped by father for losing match.

Kolkata: In a lesson for parents who push their children to excel, a father faces 10 years in jail for slapping his son to death for not winning a local table tennis tournament.

With a dream to make his son a national champion in table tennis, Dipak Bhattacharya would hold rigorous training sessions for his 13-year-old son Biswadip. When the boy became tired or failed to win a tournament, the father would beat him up mercilessly.

This went on for years with protests by his wife and neighbours falling on deaf years and Dipak's dream turned into an obsession till the fateful day of January 8, 2007.

Having failed to win a tournament, Biswadip was subjected to torture on that day also and the training schedule was made more rigorous in the second floor hall in their house at Bansdroni, a southern suburb of the city.

Exhausted, Biswadip begged his father for rest but was rewarded with a tight slap which he could not withstand as he fell and died at a local nursing home of internal injuries.

Dipak was arrested and tried at the Fast Track Court in Alipore where Biswadip's mother Papiya gave testimony against her husband.

Fast Track Court Judge Pradip Burman on Monday found him guilty under section 304 (ii) (if act is done with knowledge that it is likely to cause death but without any intention to cause death) for which maximum penalty is imprisonment for 10 years, or fine, or both.

Quantum of punishment would be awarded by the court on Tuesday.
