CHENNAI: The Southern Railway has blamed the State Government for the delay in completion of work on the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) line between Velachery and St Thomas Mount. The project has been hit due to a change in alignment and the acquisition of land by the State Government, Southern Railway General Manager Deepak Krishan said. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Krishan said the change in alignment had affected the dwelling units, thus resulting in litigations that delayed the work. "The alignment has been changed due to technical reasons... We don't want the dwelling units to be affected and want the State Government to take a pragmatic approach in this regard," he said. The issue is expected to be sorted out soon, he added. To a query on whether the Metro Rail would affect the suburban rail services, Krishan said the fare for MRTS per km was 12.5 paise when compared to Rs 5 of Metro Rail, giving it an advantage over the latter. He also said that the AngamaliAzhutha Sabari rail project in Kerala was affected as the State Government refused to acquire land for the project. He said there were proposals to build about 20 to 30 road overbridges and man unmanned level crossings.
