HYDERABAD: Special officers have been appointed to run the mandal praja parishads in the state as the term of the president, vice-president and members of the mandal praja parishads expired on Thursday. It has been decided to appoint special officers to zilla praja parishads as the term of existing elected body will end on Friday. The state government has decided to appoint the special officers citing delay in conducting elections to the local bodies.While an officer above the rank of mandal parishad development officer will be appointed as the special officer to the mandal praja parishads in their jurisdiction, the district collectors will act as the special officers to the zilla praja parishads. The special officers have been instructed to take charge of the office immediately after the expiry of the term of the elected representatives. Following the expiry of their term, about 18,000 people's representatives (MPTCs and ZPTCs) will vacate their offices.In all, there are 1,097 mandal praja parishads and 22 zilla praja parishads in the state.Sources said that the state government is not in a hurry to hold local body elections as it was embroiled in much more pressing issues. The special officers will remain in the office till the elections are held.
