Sri Lanka smashed the ODI world record by piling up a total of 443-9 against the Dutch.

New Delhi: Sri Lanka, riding on the recent success against England, smashed the One-Day world record by piling up a total of 443/9 against The Netherlands in Amstelveen.

The match, given the status of a full ODI by the ICC, saw veteran Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya blitz away to 157 off only 104 balls.

Tillakaratne Dilshan was the other batting hero and faced just 79 deliveries for his 117.

South Africa held the previous One-Day world record for maximum runs when they scored 438/9 to win an ODI against Australia in March. That match was the first when a team had crossed the 400-run mark when Australia scored 434/4.

Sri Lanka were not really looking forward to touring The Netherlands after a gruelling tour of England where they drew the Test series and white-washed the hosts in the five-match ODI series.

But they showed no sign of fatigue as their batsmen went about the job of demolishing the inexperienced Dutch attack en route to their world record total.

Medium pacer Peter Borren, making his ODI debut, suffered the most and gave away 94 runs in his 10 overs picking up the wicket of Lasith Malinga.

The Netherlands were never going to get to the world record total but they gave a good account of their batting skills to score 248 before being bowled out in the 49th over to lose the match by 195 runs.

For Sri Lanka Dilhara Fernando was the best bowler picking up three wicket in his 9 over conceding just 39 runs.

TBM de Leede was the top scorer for the Dutch with a well made 51 off 49 balls that included six fours and one six.
