THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Revenue Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on Wednesday stressed the need for protecting natural resources from over-exploitation. He called for a concerted effort on the part of the people to conserve nature for posterity. The Minister was speaking after inaugurating the three-day State Environment Summit which opened at the Gandhi Bhavan, Thycaud. The summit is being organised jointly by the Centre for Gandhian Studies, Kerala University; Green Community; Kerala Gandhi Smarak Nidhi (KGSN); State Biodiversity Board and other organisations. By indiscriminately exploiting natural resources, some evil forces were transforming the heaven called Kerala into a hell, the Minister said. Instead of creating flora for conservation of natural resources, discussions are now taking place on how exploit them. People must act together to conserve nature and to enlighten future generations, he said. Kerala University Vice-Chancellor Dr A Jayakrishnan, who presided over the function, expressed concern over the ever-depleting natural resources and people’s indiscriminate exploitation of these resources. ‘’People in Kerala are drastically draining these natural resources without thinking of future generations,’’ he said. Vrikshamitra Award winner J Devaki Amma was draped with a ‘ponnada’ by the Minister during the function. The Minister also handed over 100 mango saplings to National Service Scheme programme coordinator Dr K Mohandas for encouraging students to take up planting of trees. Former forest minister Binoy Viswam, social activist Leela Kumari Amma, KGSN working chairman Dr N Radhakrishnan and organising committee general convener V Subash Chandra Bose also were present. Over a 1,000 people participated in a ‘Green Rally’ from Palayam to Gandhi Bhavan which preceded the inaugural function.
