NEW DELHI: The state stands to lose out on the Centre’s funding in the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) for the year as the audited statement of expenditure for the previous two years is yet to be submitted. The NRDWP, a component of Bharat Nirman, is one of the flagship programme of the UPA Government which aims at providing safe drinking water to all households in rural areas. The allocation for the state towards the NRDWP is RS150 cr.“We are yet to get the audit statement for the last two years despite repeated reminders. So we have conveyed to the state government that it won’t get the next allotment until the details on previous years’ expenditure are submitted,” an official with the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, under the Rural Development Ministry, said.Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh had written to the state governments regarding this, he said.“When the Kerala CM came to meet the minister, our minister told him that his government would have to bear the brunt for the mistakes of the former government,’’ he said.Almost all other states had furnished details regarding the expenditure, he said.Apart from auditing, the performance of the state in implementing the NRDWP is very poor. It has so far met only 6.8 per cent of the targets earmarked, making it one of the worst performers of the nation with only Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh trailing behind it.
