New Delhi: A 48-year-old from Tamil Nadu stranded in UAE who had made desperate attempts to return home has been brought back and sent to his village, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted on Tuesday.
We have brought him back to India and sent him to his village. He went up and down to the court 20 times over a year. That made it 1000 Kms. https://t.co/UGxjGE1Uhf— Sushma Swaraj (@SushmaSwaraj) December 6, 2016
Jagannathan Selvaraj, from Tiruchirappalli, had reportedly walked 1000 km in Dubai to attend court proceedings in a bid to obtain a flight ticket back home.
Selvaraj began his court journey after his mother died in Tamil Nadu and he was denied permission to go and attend her funeral.
Selvaraj's plight came to light after Dubai's Khaleej Times reported on the matter and Swaraj took up the issue.
Swaraj even sought a report from the Indian Consulate in Dubai.
Earlier, speaking to Khaleej Times, Selvaraj had claimed that he braved traffic, heat, sandstorms and exhaustion while trekking along the busy highways of Dubai.
Selvaraj travelled a distance of 22 km one way to reach Dubai Courts from his Sonapur accommodation (on the outskirts of Dubai) to attend the labour court proceedings. Selvaraj's case was going on for almost two years and he must have walked at least 20 times to Karama district in Dubai from Sonapur and back -- every time covering a distance of 50-plus kilometres in four hours.
