Stray pigs on the prowl scare locals, road users

The large number of stray pigs has become a cause of concern for residents of several areas in Vellore Corporation. Residents raised concerns about health problems after stray pigs were found within the city limits, hindering routine activities of the residents.

Salavanpet, Kuttamedu, Kaspa, Vasanthapuram, and Sasthri Nagar have been the worst hit by the pig menace.

Balamurugan of Elango Nagar in Salavanpet says his children fear to go out as these stray animals, on being confronted, often chased them. “About 10 to 12 pigs can be found in drains or nearby vacant plots in the area,” he added.

“Since there are no dustbins in the area, garbage piles up on roadsides and this attracts the stray animals. Also, canals and open drainage serves as home to them,” he added further.

Gayathri  of Thiruvalluvar Nagar noted that her 10-year-old son often fell sick due to the unhygienic environment. “We want our area to be free from the pig menace,” she said.

Kannan, of Old Town complained, “The pigs run on roads in groups, hindering free movement of vehicles.” A homemaker, Selvakumari of MGR Nagar said, “A pig died near our house last week and it raised a foul stench. We informed the Corporation, but nobody came to remove the carcass. After five days, locals had to remove and bury it,” she added.

A resident of MGR Nagar, Mohanarangam informed that locals in Old Town were rearing pigs and leaving them free to search for food.

Corporation Health Officer, C R Priyamvatha said, “Rearing pigs inside the city is banned. We have identified 15 persons who are rearing around 300 pigs within the Corporation limits. We have given them some time to move them out of the city limits. If they fail to do so, Corporation will take steps to release the pigs into the forest.
