Super cop Kiran Bedi all set to leave police service
The government has finally accepted Kiran Bedi's retirement plea.

New Delhi: Super cop Kiran Bedi is all set to leave Indian Police Service as the Union Government, after dithering for a month and a half, has decided to accept her request for voluntary retirement.

Bedi, India's first woman IPS officer, is currently holding the post of the Director General of Bureau of Police Research and Development.

Government sources said on Wednesday that the Union Home Ministry has decided to relieve Bedi from her duties as early as on Monday.

Bedi herself has confirmed this. "I have received the letter relieving me from the government," PTI quoted Bedi as saying.

Bedi, who got into several controversies during her tenure, had forwarded her application to the Home Ministry on November 15 months after she was overlooked for the post of Delhi Police Commissioner.

A Magsaysay awardee, Bedi says she now plans to pursue "strong academic and social interests". "I now look forward to working 'with' the government and not 'for' the government," she says.

The government had last week indicated that it would continue to avail of the services of Bedi for its project of National Police Mission, but she rejected the offer, saying she was not willing to work "for the government" any more.
