New Delhi: Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackeray was on the offensive after the big win in the civic polls. Thackeray continued to stand by his controversial statements against President A P J Abdul Kalam.
Keeping his statement intact on Kalam, Thackeray on Saturday lashed out again at him in his victory speech and said that he has not kept the dignity of the President's chair.
Noting that the President's actions did not reflect his esteemed position, Thackeray said Kalam was a leading scientist of the country but had "lost the dignity of the post" after he became President.
He was critical of Kalam who was yet to take a decision on Parliament attack convict Mohammed Afzal, who has been sentenced to death.
"Afzal was sentenced to death by the highest court in this country in October and yet the file has been sitting on the President's table for the past four months. Has such a thing ever happened before?" PTI quoted Thackeray speaking at Shiv Sainiks’ gathering on the victory of BMC poll.
"I have not said anything wrong about Kalam. We all have supported him to become President. Afzal's clemency letter is still lying with the president. Give me another example where the President has not taken decision on a clemency petition for four months."
Thackeray showed no remorse for his derogatory comment against Kalam at a rally in Thane last week, saying "what did I say wrong about Kalam? I am after all a cartoonist and there is nothing wrong in commenting somebody's long hair."
When asked whether the victory in Mumbai's civic polls was a vote to save Mumbai, he said, "Yes it is. Our election campaign, the editorials in Saamna, caused the Marathi man to awaken. He was angry at the attempts to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra and that is why he voted for us."
Sena supremo credited the party's win to the hard work put in by "staunch Sena loyalists."
Talking about Hindutva, Thackeray said, “I don’t want to talk about those who have left the party. Terrorism has spread throughout the country. Individually no one can fight terrorism and only Hindus can fight terrorism and fight Islam."
