The Kashmir Roundtable: An Afterthought
The Kashmir Roundtable: An Afterthought
Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google NewsThe Prime Minister inviting all the parties involved in the Kashmir dispute for a roundtable to New Delhi is one matter. That the timing was a little suspect, come as it did just before the bush visit, the separatists boycotted it (seems like they will talk to God and only to God) and that there was no agenda for the roundtable (was it basic lack of groundwork or was the intention to go with an 'open mind') is another issue altogether. Of course the protests over the gross violation of human rights in the Kashmir valley also did not help the cause at all.

While most of us will agree that it was a commendable gesture on the part of the Prime Minister to invite all and sundry to at least initiate a process of taking everyone on board so that an amicable solution is hammered out, but making the right noises just when or shall we say just because President Bush is about to visit the country does not augur well for the resolution of the Kashmir Dispute. The government needs to get more serious with the roadmap for the resolution of the issue. Enough blood has flown into the Jehlum and the Dal all these years for the government to sit back and mull as to when exactly is the right time for the resolution and who all need to be on board for NOW is the right time. Just when India wants it's place under the sun, just when Pakistan have a Dictator who can take decisions and just when people of the valley - the most important party to the dispute - want a normal life for themselves and their kids.

All the parties' involved whether it is the government, the political parties, the separatists, the hardliners or the militants should get their act together. It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a great political hobnob to realize that the least the separatists can do is participate in discussions like the one they just gave a slip. They can, in the least make a point or two about what exactly they want and how they want the government to go about it. No one will be to blame tomorrow when they are sidetracked because they would have dug this grave themselves.

It's high time this issue stops hogging the headlines. For the sake of a wannabe economic powerhouse, the sake of a careworn populace of a once carefree valley, the sake a nation which has enough issues within it's own borders to poke it's economically running nose into it's better off nation's affairs as also the overall regional stability of South Asia it is imperative that the issue is addressed by ironing out all the differences that exist and prop up from time to time.first published:February 26, 2006, 15:16 ISTlast updated:February 26, 2006, 15:16 IST
