Seminars and programmes are widely held in variety of ways to arouse awareness about the environment and the need to check further irretrievable damage to it. The most important objective of conducting such seminars is to emphasise on the importance of inculcating a sense of awareness among people to strive for a pollution-free and safe environs around us in order to lead a happy and healthy life.It is quite obvious that untidy surroundings and a polluted environment are responsible for causing hazards to the health of our people, this being more pronounced in cities. Therefore, it is our utmost sense of responsibility to keep the environment clean and safe. Every individual should understand the concept of environmental safety and put in the maximum endeavour to achieve the objective.Health and environment are mutually dependent and are responsible for the general well-being of the people and their day-to-day activities in these days of urbanisation and industrialisation. Despite the best efforts of the government, both central and state, by incorporating technology and science to tackle the environmental pollution menace, the gravity and complexity of the problem remains daunting. The environment, comprising air, water and civic habitat is vitiated. Air pollution is the greatest concern as it has an immediate and telling impact on our lives. Carbon monoxide, a poisonous by-product let out by vehicles, and industrial pollution caused by industries form a major part of the air pollution hazard cities face. Carbon monoxide proves hazardous when mixed with oxygen and nitrogen present in the air causing eye infections and a lot of respiratory tract infections.Air pollution thus caused can be minimized by installing a device at the rear end of exhaust pipes of vehicles. The metal component in the device helps in oxidizing the poisonous carbon monoxide thereby reducing the toxic nature of the gas.Water pollution is caused due to mixing up of effluents containing chemicals like nitrites, nitrates, sulphides, sulphates, silicates among many others, when released from factories into water bodies and sources like lakes, tanks, reservoirs and rivers. This renders the water unfit for human consumption and further make it harmful for the very existence of the flora and the fauna. Hence, water pollution, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and many other leading organizations, is the potential cause for many health related diseases like cholera which being the biggest killer.Soil pollution is a cause for concern along with noise pollution, mainly due to vehicle horns and loudspeakers used for campaigns and celebrating during festivals. Soil pollution also leads to water pollution. It is necessary to promote a pollution free environment through scientific means. The intervention of the judiciary should be only in the worst-case scenarios. The Pollution Control Board (PCB), the apex government body in this concern, should be in the forefront to create awareness.
