Unbelievably, the other face of the Governor of Karnataka Dr Hamsaraj Bharadwaj endeared and enthralled the audience at the Gayana Samaja on Sunday. After conferring the title of Gaana Vaaridhi on a sensational violinist Dr. Mysore M. Manjunath at the valedictory of the tenth annual ten day music festival held under the auspices of M.A.Narasimhachar Music Foundation, Dr.Bharadwaj rendered a scholarly valedictory speech covering Haridasa sahitya, importance and greatness of music, the spiritual dimension of it, his successful attempts in building a meaningful memorial at Gwalior for the legendary Hindusthani musician Tansen, the contribution of saint-poets to the literature and music as well and so on.The scholar in him vibrantly radiated. He also shared with the audience in an interesting manner his fascinating interactions with the titans of music. His milansaar(sociability) tendency came to the full view when he wished and shook hands with almost everyone who was on his way from the stage to his motorcade. Dr.Bharadwaj released Samarpana, a souvenir brought out on the occasion.Unremitting diligenceThe following violin duet featuring the awardee Dr. Mysore M. Manjunath and his brother Mysore M. Nagaraj along with the spirited accompaniments lent by Trichy Harikumar(mridanga) and Giridhar Udupa(ghata) was melodious, majestic in notes and wide in sweep. The well grounded musicians blessed with natural talent coupled with unremitting diligence invested an artistic excellence on their renditions of Chandrajyothi (Baagayanayya), Sogasuga, Mohana and Todi(with a fine graha bedha producing Mohana) raga, tana and pallavi (Taaraka Brahmaswaroopini taamarasa vilochani, aditala).A constant dialogue between the brothers and the accompanists opened up new dimensions of the melody and laya. The volume, range, buoyancy and consistent colourfulness were enchanting.A jewel of a dancerA visually arresting Bharatanatya performance by Madhulika Acharya at the JSS auditorium captivated the lovers of dance. Madhulika, a richly talented student of Guru B. Bhanumathi and Guru Sheela Chandrasekhar proved to be a jewel of a dancer with her free flowing movements. Very usefully accompanied by Guru Sheela Chandrasekhar (nattuvanga), Srivatsa (vocal), Dayakar(violin), Narasimhamurthy(flute), Shankararaman(veena), Srihari(khanjira) and Narayanaswamy(mridanga) the dancer clinched the sober marga-oriented presentation. It was a visually arresting performance. Her dazzling presence, enviable figure, articulated araimandi central posture and dramatic freezes made a powerful impression on audiences. The Ganesha stuti(Gajavadana; Abhogi) was followed by Hamsanandi jatiswara. A praiseworthy angashuddhi marked her nritta. The well knit combination of aduvus, jathis and swaras was applauded. It was a good idea to depict ashta rasas in relation to the Goddess Parvathi on the basis of Shive shringarardra(ragamalika) drawn from Jagadguru Sri Shankaracharya’s Sowndarya Lahari and proceed on to enact the evergreen Dikshitar krithi Kanjadalaayataakshi(Kamalamanohari raga). The myriad manifestations of the Devi breathed life in her neat abhinaya. The miracles of Sri Krishna birth, His childhood leelas of destruction of the evil and protection of the good, the Geetopadesham et al were classically shown byvibrant dance vocabulary.Bharatanatya is a form which gives full room for opening out of the body, in line and sweep, movements like the sarukkari and hands moving in space, the dancer edifices the grand architecture of lines afforded in the form. Stretching the body to its maximum is a point particularly for a male dancer to concentrate on.The young dancer-quartet Karthik Datar, B.S.Ananth, R.Srinivasan and C.Somasekhar performing under the title of Tandava---The Vibrance has been delighting the rasikas with their vigorous, vibrant, vivacious and powerful movements, utplavanas, bhramaris etc which add singular beauty to the male dancing. The eight day annual dance festival Kala Nadam led by seasoned dancer-duo Nandini Mehtha and Murali Mohan being held from last Saturday at the ADA Rangamandira featured the Tandava group on Monday. It is noteworthy that the proceeds of the festival are being donated to an NGO Sumangali Seva Ashrama. In their dance the in-form dancers portrayed Chandrasekhara Bhajami santatam (Chandrakauns), Chaturmukhi(Maheshwara sootra, Thyagaraja’s Nada tanumanisham and tani avartana) with the aid of an energetic Bharatanatya vocabulary. Their group alignments and realignments filled the eyes of the lovers of dance.
