A 58-year-old farmer and craftsman named Sridhara Hegade from Sirsi town, Uttara Kannada, Karnataka has stirred the headlines because of an innovative technique. According to Local18 Karnataka, he has crafted furniture, with the help of wood, cut from the logs of walnut trees. He gives the wood the shape of a wooden box and other furniture-related objects as well.

Initially, Hegade embarked on this mission in his garden and charged Rs 100 for wood obtained from every walnut tree. He employs labourers to collect the fallen walnut wooden trees and then pays them their remuneration. Thus, he also generates income for them with his newfound business. 58-year-old Hegade has been curating flower rangoli and scratch art for 25 years and started making furniture with walnut trees for 2 years only.

To construct the furniture, first, the wood is cut into pieces and polished, and then the tree’s inner bark is removed. The bark is then shaped like a bamboo box, polished two or three times, dried, and then coloured with oil paint. With the help of walnut wood, Hegade has been able to make boxes, sofas, chairs, tipi, madu, photo frames, design work, ceilings and table tops. Till now, only bamboo was used in the manufacturing of furniture, but now using walnut tree wood has given an added advantage in furniture construction. It has created a revolution of sorts in furniture making.

A lot of walnut wood and the items of furniture made from it have been sold to many hotels and there is a need for more materials now to meet the increasing demand. The walnut trees are not affected by moths like other trees. In this way, the furniture objects made from these trees can last for 10 years comfortably.

Moths can effectively destroy the furniture and clothes that you are wearing. To keep them away, moth-repellent sachets with herbs like cloves, lavender, and thyme should be used effectively. The food items should be frozen to kill any eggs or larvae.
