HUBLI:  Hopes of Jagadish Shettar becoming chief minister of the state have been shattered after Sadananda Gowda was elected as the new legislature party leader. The 'TINA' (There Is No Alternative) factor which had played a vital role in shaping up Shettar's political career, did not work out this time.
Shettar, who has always been dependent on the support from the party high command, failed to win over not only the MLAs of his North Karnataka region, but also those belonging to his Lingayat community.Basically, Shettar is not an aggressive politician. He never confronted any leaders of his party.

When he was first elected to the Assembly in 1994, the party was riding on Hindutva wave and Shettar was the beneficiary of Hindu outfits' efforts to hoist the national flag in the controversial Idgah Maidan. He had then defeated Basavaraj Bommai, the present confidante of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa.

Lingayat leader B B Shivappa was the front runner for the post of the leader of Opposition in the Assembly during S M Krishna's Congress government.
