Protesting against the high-handed behaviour of the government towards Telangana supporters on September 30, Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) chairman Prof M Kodandaram along with other TJAC leaders staged a two-hour ‘Mouna Deeksha’ (silent protest) at Bapu Ghat at Langar Houz here on Tuesday.

Clad in khadi and sporting Gandhi caps on their heads, the TJAC leaders offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary before taking up the Deeksha for two hours, starting at 11:30 am.

The TJAC leaders muzzled themselves with black ribbons during the protest.

Speaking to mediapersons, before the Mouna Deeksha commenced, Kodandaram squarely blamed the government for acting violently against the peaceful protestors and for provoking them.

“By creating hurdles in the way of marchers, the government acted against the spirit of mutual faith after it had accorded permission for the march.

The march was an expression of the Telangana people’s aspirations for a new state, of their long suppressed desire to feel free in their own state and enjoy natural resources, but unfortunately the government saw it as a law and order problem,” he said, while strongly condemning the attitude adopted by the government.

The Telangana agitation has been a democratic and non-violent movement from the beginning, he said, adding, “I appeal to the people, especially youth, not to resort to any violence even if provoked, and restrain themselves from taking hasty steps like suicides.

” On being pointed out that the state and central government seem to be least inclined towards the creation of a Telangana state, Kodandaram said whether the governments are willing or not, the people of Telangana will continue their struggle till it is achieved.

He found fault with the UPA government for reneging on the promise of Telangana state made three years ago on the birthday of its chairperson Sonia Gandhi
