Hosur: In a chilling crime, unidentified assailants shot dead and beheaded Palani (45), a senior functionary of the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK), at a farmland near Hosur in Krishnagiri district early on Thursday. Police suspect the murder was executed at the behest of Thally CPI MLA Ramachandran and his brother Varadarjan out of previous enmity. A case has been registered against the duo and five others.
While police attributed personal motives for the murder, privately, PDK leaders indicated that there it was a fallout of political rivalry as well. Palani was the Krishnagiri district organising secretary of the PDK.
Police said that Palani was working in his farm in Balepuram along with his 25-year-old son Vanchinathan when a group chased and shot him. The victim ran and fell on the ground when the assailants surrounded him and chopped off his head using sharp weapons. His son managed to escape.
