CHENNAI: Following a rise in the number of complaints related to child abuse from schools in TN, the State government is planning strict regulations, including nullifying degrees of school teachers, said official sources.Sources said that the government was seriously considering such regulations after the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) received 115 complaints of child abuse from the State. This comes in the wake of Chief Secretary Debendranath Sarangi holding a meeting with NCPCR chairperson Shantha Sinha.Rights activists who were present, stressed the need for the School Education Department to probe child abuse complaints instead of the police. “They should file a complaint with the police based on the outcome of the probe; the police should not question the students,” insisted RTE representatives for TN Henry Tiphagne and Ossie Fernandez.Sources said the state was keen to conduct counselling for teachers, parents and students, aimed at all-round educational development.“Ten mobile counselling units will be launched as a pilot project, and soon expanded to cover the entire State, with modifications if required,” sources said.Sources said that Sinha was happy to learn of the highest ever allocation of Rs 14,553 crore for school education while she was curious to know how much was allocated to the State police, which was around Rs11,000 crore. The State will insist that Collectors hold monthly review meetings for the sum allocated through the School Education Department.
