Traffic jams on the Western Express Highway (WEH) in Mumbai due to the bottleneck in Kandivali will continue till August.

The expansion work on the Akurli Underpass in Kandivali East which started in 2019, was stopped a year ago in June 2023 due to the presence of the gas pipeline at the piling site.

Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) officials said it took six months for Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) to shift the gas pipeline instead of its original 40-day deadline, according to a Medium report.

The northbound traffic on WEH has been witnessing heavy traffic jams since last year due to the incomplete work on the underpass widening.

The Mumbai traffic police also opened one lane on the opposite side of the highway for northbound traffic movement to ease jams.

However, officials said that with the shifting of the pipeline now complete, the project is expected to be finished by August 2024.

After completion, the width of the Akurli underpass will be increased from 16 meters to 33 meters, which will bring a releief in traffic jams for the commuters on WEH.
