Treat your taste buds to street food at Arusuvai Thiruvizha

Wouldn’t it sound wonderful if all you had to do is to help our rural masses binge on your favourite cuisine? Well, here’s your chance.

The Rotary International has organised a food festival to raise proceeds for its rural development initiative.

Named Arusuvai Thiruvizha (festival of the six tastes), the three-day event will be held on the Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar beginning October 12.

Culinary delights, with emphasis on street food, from virtually across the nation will be showcased at this event, touted by its organisers as the largest of its kind in the nation. Interacting with mediapersons here on Tuesday, district governor Raja Srinivasan said: “Street food, though popular, is not explored largely by people as they feel hygiene is given the go-by during its preparation.” He adds that those specialising in local cuisine will be invited to the event.

“For instance, those preparing the Tirunelveli halwa or vada-pav will be brought from the respective regions. There will be around 100 stalls selling food from various regions of the nation.”

Apart from the local flavoured food, snacks and other edibles prepared by rural masses will be sold here. “This is to extend support to rural people and help them stand on their feet.”

Also present was Rotarian Sriram, who said that around 60,000 people were expected at the event.

He added that the Facebook page of the fest garnered as many as 2.8 lakh visits. A number of private organisations are also extending support to the festival.
