MADURAI: Two Islamic fundamentalists — Abdul Rahman alias Abdullah (26) of Nelpettai and Ismath (22) of Simmakkal — said to be sympathisers of extremist Imam Ali, were arrested here on Tuesday in connection with the alleged attempt on BJP leader L K Advani’s life during his visit to the temple town last week. Sources said a third person was detained in rural Thirumangalam late on Tuesday night. A hunt is on for their accomplices.
A villager of Alampatti had on Friday helped the police recover and defuse a pipe bomb planted beneath the Kounda River bridge, along the route of Advani’s Jan Chetna Rath Yatra. The Crime Branch CID’s Special Investigation Team said: “The SIT had a breakthrough in the case of bomb planting at Alampatti...on the scheduled route of BJP leader L K Advani from Madurai to Rajapalayam… Based on their confession one autorickshaw and a motorcycle used for the crime have been seized.”
Sharing details about the breakthrough, a senior police officer said, “Tyre marks of an Apache motorcycle lifted from the spot from where the pipe bomb was recovered and the make of the battery used in the explosive helped the investigators track down the two.” While Rahman is a resident of Nelpettai, Ismath is from Simmakkal.
On September 30, Imam Ali’s supporters had allegedly planted a crude bomb on a government bus in Madurai. Police had defused the explosive.
