CHENNAI: Two notorious rowdies from Thoothukudi district sustained injuries while making low-intensity explosives at their housing quarters in Kilpauk in the wee hours of Friday. Preliminary investigation showed that the duo, who had murder cases against them, could have been hiding in the city fearing reprisals from a rival gang.Police identified the duo as B Sathya (32) of Muthusamy Street, Mattakadai, and S Suganthan (27) of Arokiapuram in Thuthukoodi. Sathya had been staying in Room 9 of Tamil Nadu Housing Board Quarters on New Avadi Road, Kilpauk, for the past three months and was working as a lorry driver in Minjur, while Suganthan joined him 20 days, DCP K Bhavaneeswari said.Loud NoisePolice suspect that the two men, who were involved in murder cases, had taken refuge in the city to escape any revenge attack by their rivals. Suganthan was reportedly involved in the murder of the kin of Dalit leader Pasupathi Pandian, who himself met a gory end in the hands of a gang near Dindigul in January. It was after receiving threat calls that the two were making country bombs in their room, when the explosives went off around Thursday midnight, waking up other residents of the TNHB quarters from their sleep. On hearing the loud noise, they rushed to the duo’s room and found them bleeding. The explosion had ripped through the room, leaving Suganthan’s fingers severed and the furniture and other objects in tatters.Manimaran, a resident, called the police control room and soon senior police officials, including DCP Bhavaneeswari, arrived at the spot. Suganthan was taken to Stanley Medical College Hospital while Sathya was admitted to the Government General Hospital. They were stated to be out of danger. Explosives experts collected samples of the chemical substances found at the scene and sent them for analysis. A search of the room also yielded four knives.Commissioner of Police J K Tripathy described the blast as a low-intensity explosion caused by country-bombs. Threat CallsProbe showed that the two men reigned as rowdies in their native district. Sathya had a murder case registered against him at the Anna Nagar police station, while Suganthan had a case against him in Thoothukudi district, the DCP said. Sources said Suganthan’s father Selvaraj, who was a notorious rowdy, was murdered in 1999. The youth began to follow his father’s footsteps and soon became involved in criminal activities. It was fear of reprisal from rival gangs that made Sathya flee his native district three months ago and soon, his associate too followed. Sathya, who suffered minor injuries, told the police that Suganthan had been receiving threat calls even after coming to the city and got a call on Thursday morning. Panic spurred him into making a bomb and it was while handling the chemicals that the explosion took place.Joint Commissioner (East Zone) S N Seshasai told reporters that investigation was on to find the complete background of the two men and the reasons behind their presence in Chennai.T P Chatram police registered a case against the rowdies under Sections 4 and 5 of Explosive Substances Act, 1908 r/w Section 25 of Arms Act 1959 and Sections 286, 337 and 338 IPC.
