CHENNAI: “The AIADMK government is executing an unannounced Emergency in the State,” DMK president M Karunanidhi said on Thursday reacting to the arrest of his party colleague K N Nehru and some others earlier in the day.Answering queries of mediapersons after signing the register of the State Assembly, the DMK president said he alone could not take a decision on staging a series of agitations to protest against the continued arrest of his partymen. But this could be done in consultation with the leaders of the party and the general and executive councils.Later, addressing a public meeting, Karunanidhi said, it is not the democracy alone that is under threat in the AIADMK regime, but a range of things including Tamil language, music, art and culture. “Can the AIADMK refute that the first 100 days of its regime is replete with 86 murders, 110 robberies besides chain-snatching and other criminal activities,” the DMK leader asked. “Reverting the Tamil New Year from Thai to Chitirai cannot be taken lightly. The AIADMK regime is trying to annihilate the Tamil language and culture and we have a duty to protect them,” Karunanidhi said.
