KOLLAM: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has called upon the people and the government of Tamil Nadu to understand the safety concerns of Kerala regarding the 116-year-old Mullaperiyar dam.Inaugurating his mass contact programme for the district here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister said that Tamil Nadu should justify its vehement opposition to the construction of a new dam, despite Kerala Government’s undertaking to the Centre promising to continue supplying the same quantum of water which is being given now.He said the frequent tremors in the region have created panic among the people and the state holds that the new dam was the only solution to this. But sadly, Tamil Nadu is not sharing the same concern with the state, he said.Stating that the state’s priority in the issue was the safety of the people in the region, he said that ‘security for Kerala and water for Tamil Nadu’ would be the policy of the state in the matter.
