UP DGP writes to CM, demands death penalty for rapists
The police officer, in a letter to UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, demanded that those who indulged in sexual harassment be imprisoned immediately.

New Delhi: The Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh has reportedly written a letter to Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, demanding death penalty for rapists. In his letter, DGP AC Sharma said that rape must be treated as a rarest of rare crime and be dealt with accordingly.

"The UP government should take appropriate constitutional steps to ensure this is done. Those who indulge in eve-teasing or other forms of sexual harassment must be imprisoned immediately and strict action should be taken against them," he added.

His remarks come amidst the furore over the brutal gangrape of a young girl in a moving bus in Delhi on December 16. The girl is currently battling for her life at a Singapore hospital, where she was shifted after suffering a cardiac arrest as she underwent treatment at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital.

Protests erupted in the aftermath of the incident as reports of the rape survivor having suffered intestinal damage hit headlines. The girl was gangraped by a group of six men and brutally assaulted with an iron rod before being stripped and thrown off the bus.
