US Open: Kuznetsova out, Monfils in QF
Monfils beat countryman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 to give France its first US Open quarterfinalist in a decade.

New York: Two-time major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova double-faulted 10 times and was upset by 45th-ranked Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the fourth round of the US Open on Monday. A little later, Gael Monfils beat countryman Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 to book his place in the quarterfinals.

Cibulkova reached her first quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows despite being treated by a trainer for a left leg problem between sets. She was the lowest-ranked of the 16 women in the fourth round.

Her best Grand Slam result was reaching the semifinals at last year's French Open. The 11th-seeded Kuznetsova won the 2009 title at Roland Garros, as well as the 2004 US Open championship.

Cibulkova is 2-8 against top-15 players this season and both victories came against Kuznetsova.

Gael Monfils beat countryman Richard Gasquet to give France its first US Open quarterfinalist in a decade.

The 17th-seeded Monfils had never advanced past the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament other than the French Open. He reached the semifinals there in 2008.

Gasquet, ranked 38th, upset sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in the second round. The former top-10 player missed more than two months last year after testing positive for cocaine. He successfully appealed, saying the drug inadvertently entered his system when he kissed a woman at a nightclub. This was his first fourth-round match at a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2008.

Gasquet had a chance to serve out the third set at 5-3 but Monfils broke back. He ended the match with his 14th ace.
