CHENNAI: A two-day video workshop was inaugurated at the Madras Medical College campus here on Saturday, focussing on common gastro-intestinal surgeries. Organised by the department of Surgical Gastroenterology (SGE) and Centre of Excellence for Upper GI Surgery of MMC, the national workshop showcased about 22 complex surgical techniques for the benefit of over 160 practising surgeons and post graduate students.Dr SM Chandramohan, Head of SGE, said, “Live surgeries can take up to six hours or more. By inviting seasoned surgeons to explain their techniques using the recorded surgeries, other surgeons can benefit more besides being able to study more procedures.” He added that the workshop would focus on the ailments common to India and give an idea of how to treat the patients more effectively.Inaugurating the CME program, the Dean of MMC Dr V Kanagasabai said that showing the procedures on a larger-than-life screen would help the delegates observe the nuances followed by the masters of the technique. He also presented commemorative plaques to the retiring general surgeon chiefs from MMC, including Medical Superintendant Dr Palani and Head of Surgery Department Dr Gunaseelan.Internationally recognised surgeons from Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Madurai, Mumbai and Hyderabad addressed at the workshop on procedures for oesophageal, stomach, pancreatic, liver and colon cancer.
