THRISSUR: The Vigilance and Anti-corruption Bureau (VACB) has once again given a clean chit to Oommen Chandy in the palmolein case. In a 90-page report submitted to a Special Court in Thrissur, on Saturday, it maintained that no solid evidence to indicate Chandy’s role could be brought forth by the investigating agencies.   “The investigation team could not find any substantive evidence to prove any underhand or out of turn role in the decision to import palmolein from the Power and Energy Limited Company,” said the report.  The report, tabled by the Vigilance Superintendent of Police, V N Sasidharan, added that Oommen Chandy was not aware of the details of the decision to import palmolein through the Singapore based company, as the decision was not taken by him. The case, that has been in the eye of the storm for almost two decades, now saw 12 political leaders, including Chandy, being interrogated after the the Left Democratic Front brought to fore the corruption in 1993. The Vigilance probe ordered by Thiruvananthapuram Vigilance Court, following a petition by the then LDF government, was shifted to Thrissur over allegations that the probe was being jeopardised by involvement of vested interests. The court had subsequently ordered a probe to confirm Chandy’s role in the case.Though Chandy was not cited as the prime suspect, his passive nod to T H Mustafa, another accused, was brushed off by the court as baseless allegations.
