Supreme Court asks Centre to recover dues from politicians and parties, file report before May 1.
New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that various political parties and politicians owe it over Rs 50 crore as rent for their official accommodations in Delhi.
Major defaulters include the Congress, which owes Rs 64 lakh for a bungalow on 5 Raisina Road, and a Congress secretary who owes Rs 26 lakh for a flat on 26 Akbar Road. Senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh too has not paid a rental of Rs 18 lakh to the government.
A Bench of Justice B N Aggarwal and Justice Naolekar asked the Centre to recover the arrears Naolekar file a status report before May 1.
The court gave the order while hearing a public interest litigation.
