Islamabad: Pakistan on Wednesday said President Pervez Musharraf had sought 'reciprocal flexibility' between New Delhi and Islamabad to find a negotiated settlement to the Kashmir issue.
Gen Musharraf "was arguing for flexibility on both sides for a negotiated settlement of the Kashmir dispute", a statement issued by Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said.
Aslam was reacting to a query on Gen Musharraf's comments during an interview to an Indian news channel on Monday, in which he had said Pakistan would give up its claim on Kashmir if India accepts his four-point solution, which includes demilitarisation and 'self-governance with joint supervision mechanism'.
"We will have to.. Yes... If this solution comes up," he had said when asked whether Pakistan is prepared to give up its claim on Kashmir.
Aslam said, "Essentially, what he said was that Pakistan was ready to show flexibility provided India did the same. It was only through reciprocal flexibility that a negotiated settlement, acceptable to all sides, was possible."
Describing the headlines in the media as 'misleading', she said Gen Musharraf had only reiterated "the well-known view that in step with India, Pakistan is willing to be flexible in pursuit of an acceptable negotiated settlement". "In the interview, he again referred to ideas that have been discussed in the past and which have found resonance and evoked keen interest among Kashmiris," she said.
