Weather News: 8 Dead, Over 70 Missing After Massive Landslide in Manipur's Noney; PM Modi, Prez Kovind Condole Deaths

Seven people have lost their lives while 45 others are missing after a massive landslide in Manipur’s Noney district. The landslide took place around midnight on Wednesday and struck the company location of 107 Territorial Army of Indian Army deployed near Tupul Railway Station for protection of under construction railway line from Jiribam to Imphal, a press release said.

The landslide triggered by incessant rains caused damage to Tupul station building of ongoing Jiribam – Imphal new line project and also stuck the track formation, camps of construction workers, rescue operations in progress, NF Railway CPRO said.

Rescue operations are underway in Noney  and Chief Minister N Biren Singh is in constant touch for the same. So far, 19 people have been rescued and are being treated at Noney Army Medical unit.

Meanwhile, flight operations were hit as monsoon entered Delhi and brought heavy rain for the Delhiites on Thursday morning, also bringing along the much-needed relief from the scorching heatwave.

13 soldiers of the Territorial Army and five civilians have so far been rescued

The Army on Thursday said 13 soldiers of the Territorial Army and five civilians have so far been rescued from the landslide-hit railway construction site in Manipur’s Noney district. At least eight people were killed and over 70 went missing after a massive landslide hit the railway construction site on Wednesday night.

In a statement, the Army said Assam Rifles and Territorial Army troops carried out the rescue operations throughout the day in the general area of the Tupul railway station, in spite of inclement weather. “The civil administration has cautioned civilians living in downstream areas of the (Ejai) river to take precautions and evacuate due to likelihood of breach in the dam created on the river by the landslide,” the statement said. The search operations will continue during the night, it added. Engineering equipment, including dozers, have been pressed into service for creating access to the site and help in the rescue efforts, it said.

President Kovind Condoles Loss of Lives

President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday condoled the loss of lives of civilians and armed forces personnel due to a landslide in Manipur and prayed for the safety of people for whom rescue operation was underway.

PM Modi speaks to CM Biren Singh, Takes Stock

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation in Manipur and also spoke to CM Biren Singh.

“Spoke to Manipur CM Shri @NBirenSingh Ji and reviewed the situation due to a tragic landslide. Assured all possible support from the Centre. I pray for the safety of all those affected. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon,” the PM tweeted.

Andheri Subway in Mumbai has been temporarily closed due to waterlogging. Traffic has been diverted to Gokhale Road, Mumbai Traffic Police said.

Delhi Traffic Police said that movement of traffic has been restricted at Railway underpass Pul Prahladpur. Both the carriageways are closed due to waterlogging.

Waterlogging and traffic snarls were reported from parts of Delhi after the sudden burst of heavy rainfall on Thursday morning.

-Incessant rain hits normal life in Bihar

Heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life in several parts of Bihar, especially the state capital Patna.

With the rain continuously lashing Patna for the past 24 hours, several localities in the district are water logged forcing people to wade through knee-deep water.

Several localities like Mithapur, Yaarpur, Jakkanpur, Rajendra Nagar, bus stand, Sipara, Digha, Kurji, are inundated.

As per the MeT department, the situation is likely to persist for the next two-three days with more rain expected in the next 72 hours in several parts of the state. The met department has registered 37.9 mm rainfall in Bihar.

Cyclonic wave arises from Rajasthan to Bay of Bengal leading to heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and lightning fall, a MeT official said.

-Monsoon arrives in Jammu: IMD

Monsoon arrived in plains of Jammu on Thursday morning, the weather department said, adding that frequent showers and at times intense rainfall is expected from now in Jammu region, especially in morning hours.

-Flights diverted due to rain in Delhi-NCR

Two flights coming to Delhi were diverted on Thursday morning due to heavy rain in the city.

While two flights were diverted to Amritsar and Jaipur, all international flights were running 30 minutes late.

-Monsoon enters Delhi!

Delhi woke up to rainfall on Thursday as monsoon finally entered the city, bringing much-needed relief for the residents from the scorching heatwave.

Predicting that monsoon would reach Delhi on Thursday or by Friday, the IMD had issued an orange alert in Delhi for rain for Thursday.

According to the IMD, thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of entire Delhi and NCR (Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar, Ballabhgarh), during the next two hours.

-Manipur river blocked due to landslide

A river flowing through Tamenglong and Noney districts in Manipur has been completely blocked due to the massive landslide, triggering danger of flash flood in the nearby villages.

Some people are also feared trapped under debris, as per All India Radio news.

As per the latest update, 13 people have been rescued from the site. The injured individuals are being treated at Noney Army Medical unit. Evacuation of the critical injured personal is in progress.

-Lake formed in Uttarakhand village due to landslides triggers fear of 2013-like disaster 

Authorities have discovered a lake that has formed near Kuwari village in Uttarakhand’s Bageshwar district due to frequent landslides since the 2013 disaster.

Fearing a repeat of 2013 calamity, residents in the Kuwari village are raising alarm about the lake that they say has heightened the risk of earthfall in the landslide-prone area and could pose a risk to local residents, The Print reported.

While local authorities have ordered an inspection and say that the lake poses “no immediate threat to lives” and efforts are on to shift villagers from the landslide-prone place to safe areas, villagers feel if remedial measures are not taken with immediate effect, it may cause a big disaster.

“If remedial measures are not taken with immediate effect, it may cause a big disaster. A lake burst will lead to massive flooding in the Pindar and threaten many living in downstream Chamoli,” the report quoted a villager as saying.

-Assam flood situation worsens, 151 dead

The flood situation in Assam worsened further on Wednesday with 12 more people losing their lives and the number of affected people increasing to 31.5 lakh, while Silchar town in Cachar district remained under water for the last 10 days, officials said. Eleven people died due to floods and one in a landslide, a bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.

The fresh fatalities have pushed the toll due to floods and landslides in the state this year to 151. The number of affected people increased to 31.54 lakh in 26 districts, up from 24.92 lakh on the previous day. Brahmaputra, Beki, Kopili, Barak and Kushiyara rivers were flowing above the danger level.

As many as 2,675 villages in 79 revenue circles have been affected across the state, with 3,12,085 people having taken shelter in 569 relief camps. Cachar is the worst affected with 14.30 lakh people suffering, followed by Barpeta (5.49 lakh) and Nagaon (5.19 lakh).

Five embankments have been breached, while 177 roads and five bridges have been damaged. A total of 548 houses have been fully damaged, and 1,034 have been partially damaged due to the floods.

-Monsoon almost here for northern states, orange alert in Delhi for Thursday

Conditions are favourable for southwest monsoon to reach Delhi-NCR, parts of Punjab and Haryana on Thursday or by Friday, the IMD said, issuing an orange alert warning for moderate rainfall in the national capital for June 30. The maximum temperature will come down to 33-34 degrees Celsius by July 1, IMD said for Delhi.

IMD also said fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall and isolated thunderstorm/lightning with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely over Haryana-Chandigarh during June 29-July 1 and in Punjab on June 29 and 30. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh during the next five days, according to the forecast.

1 dead, 5 injured in Uttarakhand landslide

A woman from Maharashtra lost her life and five others sustained injuries when the vehicle in which they were travelling was hit by a landslide on Kedarnath road on Wednesday, an official said. The incident occurred near Sonprayag on the Rudraprayag-Gaurikund National Highway around 3 pm, Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar said.

There were 11 people in the vehicle at the time of the accident and they were returning from Kedarnath, he said. The vehicle was engaged in Sonprayag-Gaurikund shuttle service and was hit by huge boulders and debris that suddenly came down from a hillock near Munkatiya, he said.

The woman from Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar was identified as Pushpa Mohan Bhonsle (62). She died on the spot, the official said. On receiving information about the incident, police and State Disaster Response Force personnel reached the spot and started relief and rescue operations, Rajwar said.

Uttarakhand was lashed by rain on Wednesday leading to landslides at several places in the state.
