Kolkata: A group of girl students, who had failed their Class 12 pre-board examinations held their teachers hostage at the school in Sontoshpur for 21 hours seeking reversal of the decision, but freed them on Tuesday after assurance of a review by the West Bengal Higher Secondary Council (WBHSC).
This sparked a chain reaction with such unsuccessful students in at least two other schools demonstrating outside their institutions demanding that they be declared successful.
As many as 14 students who had failed their class 12 pre-board examinations demonstrated outside the Jagatpur Rukmini Vidyamandir at Behala demanding that they be declared as successful. The students allegedly tried to assault teachers with bamboo staves, before the police intervened.
Protests were also organised by 19 unsuccessful students of the class 10 pre-board examinations at the Anandasundari Girls School at Baguihati in North Kolkata. The trouble at the Rishi Aurobindo Balika Vidyalaya at Sontoshpur in south Kolkata began around 3:00 pm on Monday with 29 students gheraoing headmistress Srimati Ghosh and several other teachers demanding that they be given pass marks and allowed to sit for the board exams, police sources said.
The students claimed they had been unfairly marked. Parents of some of the failed students also joined the gherao. At around 1:00 pm on Monday, however, the teachers were allowed to go after an official of the WBHSC promised a review and asked the students who had failed and teachers to go to the board office on Tuesday.
"The students have let the teachers free on assurance from the WBHSC that all the results of the failed students will be reviewed shortly," a police official said.
Subsequently, the successful students of the same class demonstrated outside the school against the decision to review the answer scripts of those who had failed.
Later, WBHSC president Muktinath Chatterjee told reporters "the WBHSC is requesting the school authorities to arrange for a fresh examination for the unsuccessful students and to properly evaluate answer scripts."
WBHSC Secretary Achinta Pal said that following the examination of the tabulation sheet by the board it was found that one of the students was declared successful in the Bengali language paper though he secured poor marks, while some unsuccessful examinees who had got more marks than him had been declared failed in the subject. He claimed that school authorities had admitted to the lapse.
