BANGALORE: With over 200 exhibits or models demonstrating various science concepts on display, enthusiastic students explaining difficult concepts in a lucid manner, and over 5,000 footfalls registering on Tuesday, the Mega Science Fair at Palace Grounds was a place to be.Organised by Agasthya International Foundation, over 100 Government schools from in and around Bangalore participated in the science fair. Be it Newton’s laws or sustainable practices to conserve energy, the students were game to explain everything. As one student Rakesh puts it, “I love explaining it over and over again. Many other students even asked me doubts and I was able to clear it. It was a super experience.”This science fair was a result of a series of fairs that have conducted as a part of the “Under the Young Instructor” programme organised by Agastha Foundation. The idea behind the project was “teaching children through children”.“Research shows that one retains only five per cent of the 90 per cent lecture given in the class. The foundation believes that the retention will be very high when the knowledge flows from one student to another,” said Ram Raghavan, chairman of Agastha foundation.“After selecting students from different government schools, we train them,” he added. Students from BSAP girls high school and Sheshadripuram high school were among the participants as well as the visitors. The students displayed well prepared and excellently executed projects like paper tub, heat switch, hand boiler, floating magnet, conservation of momentum, inertia of rest, inertia of motion among other things. Several students showcased robots made from unexpected materials like paper and syringes among other things. As one student proudly explained, “I have to build the future of the country and the world.”
