Do  traditions die when a culture is modernised?’ Lost in tradition, a group photography exhibition, tries to answer this one in its own unique way. In black wooden frames, the black and white photographs contributed by 12 shutterbugs compliment the white walls of the venue in the most perfect way. Andrew McNelis’  Ecodaya Island is one of the finest of the lot. “The image has been captured at the Ecodaya Island. It was twilight, the sunlight was decreasing rapidly,” said Andrew. “What I like about the photo is that it’s suggestive of the whole contrast between the current state of India. The economy is booming here, whereas in the West, it’s collapsing, and everybody is all-consumed with this goal of making money. At the same time, India has an incredible history that goes back to tens of thousands of years,” he states. Andrew is a British photographer, and has been living in Chennai since 2011. One of his other works include, Sold Out, which beautifully captures a street beggar caught unaware, sleeping on a lazy afternoon.  Yannick Cormier’s  Masquerade of the God series is another personal favourite. He has captured the beauty of the Dussera festival in his frames. The photographs have full or half length portraits of villagers celebrating the festival in one of the small villages of Tuticorin. “The people of the villages near Tuticorin are dressed as gods and goddesses, themselves,” says Yannick. He elaborates, “In one of the images, you will find a boy using a skull mask. For me, it depicts the change in tradition, and how the modern times have affected it.”Another interesting offering come from Rahul Dhankani, who has on display two of his photographs from one of his series, Ladakh Inside Out. Although, he is just beginning his journey into professional photography, Rahul has been able to capture the essence of Ladakh. The group photography exhibition is on showcase at the Asharaa Gallery, Abhiramapuram till March 20.
