A 50-year-old woman in Madurai on Tuesday killed her drunkard son, whom she had raised as a single mother after her husband’s death, unable to withstand his physical torture.
The woman M Pethammal, a mason of Mullainagar in BB Kulam, had informed police that she had smothered her elder son M Pon Irulan (30) with boulders in the wee hours of the day.
Police said Pethammal was alone at her home when Irulan, who came past midnight, created a ruckus in an inebriated condition and “physically tortured” her. Although she tried to prevail upon him to leave her alone, Irulan continued to harass her prompting her to allegedly kill him.
“Immediately after the incident, Pethammal had surrendered before the BB Kullam Village Administration Officer Balamurugan. The latter formally lodged a complaint with us about the incident after which we arrested Pethammal and sent Irulan’s body to the Government Rajaji Hospital for autopsy,” Tallakulam police inspector P Jeyakumar said.
“Irulan was 15 years old when his father died. I struggled to educate him till SSLC and enrol for an electrician course but he used to repeatedly come home drunk and torture me,” Pethammal told the police.
“She said she was not bothered that her son had died but she rued that he had become a source of her misery,” a police officer said.
