Will back resolution against retail FDI: M Karunanidhi

DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi on Monday kept up pressure on the UPA to rollback its decision to allow foreign direct investment (FDI) in the retail sector, saying his party will support any resolution in Parliament against it. But it may well be all bark and no bite as Karunanidhi emphasised that the relationship with the Congress will continue.

“If a resolution is moved in Parliament against allowing FDI in the retail sector by opposition parties, we will support it. The status of our relationship is one thing, the difference of opinions is another. One won’t affect the other,” said Karunanidhi.

Speaking to reporters after an emergency meeting of his party’s working committee, Karunanidhi said DMK representatives at the recent meeting of the UPA’s Coordination Committee had made clear their difference of opinion with the Centre.

“There are going to be no knee-jerk reactions to the Prime Minister’s statement after the UPA Coordination Committee meeting that reforms would continue. We are confident he will reconsider his statement,” said Karunanidhi.

The matter was also first among seven resolutions passed by the DMK working committee. The resolution urged the Centre not to implement the recommendations of the Kelkar Committee. The working committee also urged the Centre to drop the plan of getting FDI in retail, saying its implementation only in some states would cause imbalance in the economy.
