New Delhi: One of the major highlights of the Aam Aadmi Party government's maiden budget is the proposal to ensure Yamuna is pollution-free and clean, and then make it a picnic spot in the next five years.
The proposal was made in the maiden budget presented by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the Assembly which he called the "country's first Swaraj budget".
But Sisodia’s plan is not an easy one to implement as Yamuna is highly polluted in Delhi and the situation has been going from bad to worse with each passing day.
The Energy and Research Institute (TERI) had on June 5 found that 99 % of Yamuna water was not safe for drinking without treatment.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had in January 2015 prohibited cultivation of edible crop on the floodplains of the Yamuna, saying that the vegetables grown there were "highly contaminated" and their consumption could lead to cancer.
Sisodia seems to have been inspired from the Narendra Modi government’s massive Rs 20,000 crore ‘Namami Ganga’ project for the next five years which intends to clean the contaminated Ganga.
Yamuna passes through Delhi collecting the garbage and industrial effluents. Sisodia also promised that Delhi government will ensure clean water to the people in the next three years.
