Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has promised to lead a delegation to Centre to seek solutions for problems faced by the areca palm growers in the state.
At a specially convened meeting of the Lok Sabha members, legislators and farmers on Thursday at Vidhana Soudha here, the Chief Minister also promised to constitute a separate board for the drupe.
He informed the gathering that the state government was aware of the problems faced by the farmers, including that of yellow leaf disease (YLD), which threatened the entire areca gardens in several taluks.
He assured to impede on behalf of the areca growers before the Supreme Court, which is hearing a petition seeking ban on the use of areca nut in Ghutka.
He also promised to put pressure on the Centre and seek a ban on the import of areca nut.
Earlier cutting across the party line several Members of the Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly and also representatives of the areca palm growers had urged the state government to put pressure on the Centre to implement the Gorakhsingh Committee report on Areca nut growers problems.
The committee among other things had recommended to announce a financial package to help the farmers.

Ministers, C T Ravi, Vishveshwar Hegde Kageri, Jeevaraj, B J Puttaswamy, Renukacharya and others were also present on the occasion.
